Silchar: After high-voltage drama at Silchar airport yesterday, six TMC leaders left from Assam after detention and the remaining two will leave later in the day, said Cachar district DC. The delegation comprising MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Kakoli Ghosh, Ratna De Nag, Nadimul Haque, Arpita Ghosh, Mamata Thakur, Minister Firhad Hakim and MLA Mahua Moitra, were planning to visit Silchar on the issue of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft but were detained at Assam’s Silchar airport, PTI reported.
According to the Additional Director General of Police Mukesh Agarwal, they were detained under Section 151 of the CrPC to avoid possible disruption of law and order situation in the state. Later, the leaders organised a ‘dharna’ at the airport alleging misbehavior from the police authorities. Airport authorities even offered rooms to the delegation for staying but the offer was declined by the leaders.
Reacting to the detention, AITMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called it super Emergency and accused the BJP of vendetta politics. TMC is also planning to move a privilege motion against the BJP in Lok Sabha today.
Around 40 lakh people in Assam were excluded from the NRC draft list which was released on July 30. The state government had published the first draft on December 31, 2017, and out of 3.29 crore applicants 1.9 crores names were included in the list.
The NRC draft features the names, addresses, and photographs of all Indian citizens, who have been residing in the northeastern state before March 25, 1971.
