Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan attended an event organised by international cleft charity Smile Train in Mumbai on March 6. While addressing guests during her speech, Aishwarya got emotional as she spoke about her father Krishnaraj Rai’s involvement with Smile Train. Krishnaraj Rai died after several days of illness in March last year. In a video from the event, that has been trending, Aishwarya, 44, appeared visibly sentimental as she paused while talking about her father and also, choked slightly.
Aishwarya, resplendent in a Manish Malhotra anarkali suit, spoke about her daughter Aaradhya’s association with Smile Train, adding that she is delighted about the fact that Krishnaraj Rai’s birthday was declared as the Day of Smiles.
“Last year, Smile Train very generously offered to honour my father, late Mr Krishnaraj Rai, by announcing his birthday, 20th of November, as the ‘day of smiles.’ Thank you because this meant so much to us. My father worked with me, with Smile Train. And you all who know me over the years will know that I like to always do something more effective and concrete on every personal occasion of our family. That’s what my parents always taught me,” Aishwarya said.
Aishwarya is married to veteran actors Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan’s son Abhishek. Aaradhya, 6, is their first child together.
“My daughter’s birthday is on the November 16 and my father’s on 20th, so it was the year before, his last, that we celebrated Aaradhya and dad’s birthday together. This year was particularly emotional for us as a family and I really wanted to do something very, very effective, and with daddy, it had to be about smiles. It had to be about celebrating everything he has taught me, everything he has passed through me to Aaradhya, it had to be about bringing a smile to people’s lives. And we have worked together with Smile Train. Thank you that we have together decided that November 20 will be the day of smiles,” she added.
