New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party over the gang-rape of an 18-year-old woman and the death of her father in police custody in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh. The party’s women wing had on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, alleging dereliction of duty on his part over the case. The victim has alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers. Later, the girl’s father had died in police custody.
Mocking ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (a programme close to the heart of PM Modi), the Congress tweeted “Bhajpa (BJP) se beti bachao” with a hashtag. Notably, besides Unnao rape case, the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to withdraw a seven-year-old rape and abduction lawsuit lodged against former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand has also angered many. The victim had claimed that she was abducted and raped in confinement at the ashram and later Chinmayanand had threatened to get her killed if she filed a complaint against him.
In Unnao, an 18-year-old woman claimed that she was gang-raped by BJP MLA Sengar and his brothers. She further alleged that the BJP MLA, who represents Bangermau constituency in Unnao district, had got her father killed since she was not ready to withdraw the gang-rape complaint against him. The deceased, aged around 50, was arrested on April 05 under the Arms Act over his alleged involvement in a fight with the MLA’s supporters last week. Pappu Singh was taken to a hospital from the district jail on April 08 night and died during treatment on Monday. Sengar has, however, denied the allegations and demanded a high-level probe into the matter.

As the incident sparked an outrage, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath sought a report into the custodial death. Suspension of six policemen has failed to water down the incident, which has fuelled anger and widespread condemnation. Probably hugely embarrassed by the developments, the UP CM rolled out a damage control action plan which included ordering the special investigation team (SIT) probe, the arrest of the BJP legislator’s brother and a parallel magisterial inquiry.
Meanwhile, the post-mortem report suggested that the father of the Unnao rape victim died due to shock and septicaemia. It also said that there was bleeding in the man’s lower intestine (probably due to injury) and suggests lack of proper treatment in time.
