New Delhi: Kidambi Srikanth defeated Spain’s Pablo Abian 21-15, 12-21, 21-14 to assures his berth in the round of 16 of the BWF World Championships being held in China. Along with him, compatriots PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal too booked a eat in the pre-quarters. However, HS Prannoy and Sameer Verma along with the doubles team of Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirah Shetty in men’s category and Ashwini Ponappa-N Sikki Reddy in women’s category faced heavy defeat.

Sameer lost to five-time champion Lin Dan 17-21, 14-21, while Prannoy lost to Brazil’s Ygor Coelho 21-18. 16-21, 15-21. For Srikanth, it was a topsy-turvy start to the championships.

“I started off well but somehow I did too many mistakes in the second set..in the third set I was down 9-11. I couldn’t get going, I don’t know why, maybe I have tried too many things. I have to go and talk to my coach first. I am concerned about making too many mistakes but I am happy that I got everything right in the last 10 points,” said Srikanth after the match.

In the women’s singles, Sindhu bagged an easy win over Fitriani Fitriani of Indonesia with scoreline reading 21-14, 21-19. She will next face former world no. 2 Ji Hyun Sung of South Korea in the round of 16.
