Chandigarh: In a rather disturbing incident, a 34-year-old woman teacher was arrested in Chandigarh on Thursday for allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy who used to take tuitions from her, Hindustan Times reported. Notably, a few days prior to her arrest, the accused apparently tried to commit ‘suicide’ at the boy’s house after a confrontation with his parents.
According to the report, the boy’s parents contacted Childline, which is a telephone helpline service for children in distress on Wednesday regarding the matter. They were then guided to lodge a complaint with the police following which, the teacher was arrested under Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Chandigarh senior superintendent of police Nilambari Vijay Jagdale told the daily.
The accused, a science teacher at a government school, and the victim, a class 10 student, were neighbours and lived in the same locality in Sector 31, Chandigarh. Since both the families knew each other well, the boy’s parents sent their son and younger daughter to the teacher’s house for tuitions in September 2017.
However, later, the teacher asked the parents to send their daughter to a different tuition class so that she could ‘focus’ on the boy’s studies. “The parents agreed but on the pretext of imparting him knowledge, she started luring the boy physically in the beginning of 2018. She also gave him a SIM card to stay in touch with her,” Dr Sangeeta Jund, the project director of Childline, Chandigarh, told the daily.
As the boy’s performance in school deteriorated, the boy’s mother forbade him to go to the tuition classes. However, the accused, who is a mother of two girls – aged 10 and eight – had apparently become possessive of the boy and pleaded the parents to meet her with their son at her house on Monday for one last time, Dr Jund said.
During the meeting, the teacher left everyone shocked after she locked the boy in her room in front of his parents, her husband and her daughters, Dr Jund said. “She asked her husband to stay out of the matter and kept screaming that the boy will stay with her,” said Dr Jund.
The situation was brought under control after the neighbours intervened and rescued the boy. However, as the boy and his parents made their way to their house, the teacher reportedly followed them and entered their house forcefully. She then grabbed cough syrup bottle and gulped down its contents, threatening to commit suicide, Hindustan Times reported.
The boy’s parents called the police and the woman was then taken to a hospital where she underwent treatment for a day. After contacting the Childline helpline, the parents approached the police. The teacher was produced before a POCSO court on Thursday and was remanded in judicial custody.
