The coruscating month-long quadrennial extravaganza of football – the FIFA World Cup 2018 concluded on Sunday, July 15 in Russia. France overwhelmed first-time finalists Croatia 4-2 in the title showdown at the Luzhniki Stadium. This edition of the tournament would go down in history for its unforeseen turn of events. And after a breathtaking month-long of action, FIFA have officially announced the team of the tournament.

If you are a football aficionado there is not much surprise in store with the team that the world football governing body has compiled. It takes a moment to fathom that some of the recent football icons haven’t made it to the XI but it is all about some unlikely heroes. While some lived up the hype, some rose to the occasion and emerged above the ordinary.

Here’s a look at the FIFA World Cup 2018 team: Hugo Lloris, captain of the French team is the last line of defense. England’s Kieran Trippier who struck the sensational free-kick goal against Croatia in the semi-final is the right back of the team. Another English player Ashley Young has been included as the left back of the team. France’s 25-year old centre back Raphael Varane has made it to the team, there’s no surprise there. Beside him is Croatia’s Dejan Lovren who has also been a crucial cog in the Balkan team.

Among the two midfielders, Brazil’s Paulinho made it to the FIFA Playing XI. And the other one is undoubtedly the best in the business. Croatia’s captain Luka Modric who has dazzled the tournament with his performance. He has also been awarded the Golden Ball award for his talismanic stint this World Cup.

Among the three forwards, there is Belgium’s Eden Hazard, France’s Antoine Griezmann and Brazil’s Neymar. And the lone striker of the team is none other than the 19-year-old prodigy of the Franch national side Kylian Mbappe. The star-studded team has been shaped up in the 4-2-3-1 formation.
