England registered a comprehensive series win over India on Sunday in Southampton as they defeated the visitors by a margin of 60 runs in the fourth Test to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. Set a target of 245 in the fourth innings, the Indian batting lineup fell short despite half-centuries from captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane.

It was a clinical team performance by the hosts as their players put in a combined effort to take their side to the win as opposed to the Indian side, who were too reliant on their skipper with the bat. The hosts received praise from across the cricketing world after their victory, with even a number of Indian experts also lauding Joe Root’s men.

The fourth Test could have actually gone India’s way had the team seized the initiative during crucial moments of the match. In the first innings, the hosts were down to 86-6 and could have been wrapped for a lower score had India managed to take more wickets. Sam Curran scored a fighting knock of 78, which enabled his team to score 160 runs for the last four wickets.

In the final innings as well, it did seem like Rahane and Kohli could create history and chase down the target as they stitched a stand of 101 runs. However, India’s last seven wickets fell for just 61 runs, which again shows their over-dependence on Kohli and how the lower order has not contributed enough with the bat.
