Gorakhpur: The Indian Air Force has arrested a former cook of the IAF officers’ mess and handed him over to police. Shashikant Jha, who hails from Bihar’s Banka district, has been charged under the Official Secret Act (OSA) for having some secret information. Jha was arrested by the IAF on July 5.
As per Praveen Kumar Singh, the Circle Officer, Crime, Gorakhpur, Jha was apprehended while he was in an area “he wasn’t cleared to be in”. Some confidential documents were found to be in the possession of the man from Bihar. Singh added that other agencies, including the Anti-Terrorism Squad, were also probing the case.
Jha has been charged under the OSA. The documents found in his possession included the map of Indian Air Force station in Gorakhpur and the schedule of the fighter planes and other programs. Jha had neither permission nor pass to enter the Air Force colony when he was apprehended by the Air Force security.
While questioning Jha, police came to know that he previously worked as a cook at the Air Force officer’s mess. The accused has also served as a personal driver for IAF officers which gave him a chance to eavesdrop their conversations and get secret information.
In Gorakhpur, Shashikant Jha had rented a room near Durga temple in Nanda Nagar. The area falls under the jurisdiction of Shahpur police station. His wife also used to stay with him but was at her father’s house when he was arrested.
