Jagatsinghpur: In yet another shocking incident being reported from Odisha, a 14-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped by three persons, including a minor, in the state’s Jagatsinghpur district. The horrific crime occurred in the area which falls under the jurisdiction of the Tirtol police station on Friday. The Odisha Police have arrested all the three accused, including a juvenile. They all are brick kiln workers. The girl was cycling to her coaching centre when she was allegedly dragged to a bamboo forest by the three men.
The trio then silenced her and took turns to rape the 14-year-old, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Tirtol Shiba Prasad Mallick. He added that the accused had further threatened the girl against speaking about the incident to anyone. The girl, however, informed her mother about the incident after returning home. Her mother filed a police complaint on Saturday and subsequently, all the three accused were arrested. The SDPO added that the accused have admitted to their crime. The girl was sent for a medical examination.
In another development, the six-year-old girl, who was raped and then strangulated at a school campus in Jagannathpur village (Cuttack), passed away at the SCB Medical College and Hospital yesterday after struggling for life for eight days. On April 21, the girl was found in an unconscious state from the school campus. She was naked and blood was coming out of her head and mouth. There were serious injuries on her neck as well as in her private parts.
On April 26, the state’s home department tabled a White Paper in the Assembly mentioning that there was a rise in rape cases in Odisha in 2017 as compared to 2016. It said that the number of rape cases filed last year was 2,221 and in 2016, the number was 2,144.
