We hear news all the time that a certain actor was the first choice for a film and later another actor ends up doing it. For instance, Shah Rukh Khan was the original choice for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, however, after he refused, Sanjay Dutt took up the role. Similarly Aamir Khan was the first choice to play the antagonist in Yash Chopra’s Darr, but instead Shah Rukh Khan ended up doing it. But it seems, that Deepika Padukone has mostly been doing films that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had rejected.
In a recent interview with film critic Rajeev Masand, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had revealed that Farah Khan, the director of Happy New Year, first offered the role of Mohini in the film to Aishwarya and wanted to cast her opposite Shah Rukh Khan, the male lead in the film. However, Aishwarya refused to do the film and later the role was taken up by none other than Deepika Padukone.
Meanwhile, it is public knowledge that Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted to make Bajirao Mastani originally in the early 2000s with Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. However, Salman and Ash, who were dating at the time had an ugly break-up because of which the film got tanked. Later, Bhansali ended up making the film with Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.
Now, in a latest interview with SpotboyEye, Aishwarya has revealed that Bhansali had also offered the role of Rani Padmavati to her first and it was only after she refused to do the film is when the director went to Deepika Padukone and cast her instead.
“Bajirao Mastani also we were supposed to do together. He didn’t get the Bajirao for me. He didn’t get the Khilji for me; He wanted me to do Padmaavat, but could not get the Khilji for me, at the casting time. So, that’s how it didn’t happen. I would love to work together.”
As to why she refused Padmavaat, which has become the second-highest grosser at the box-office among all Bollywood films in 2018, read it from the horse’s mouth: “The person he saw to play Khilji with me playing Padmavati did not happen. So, at the end of the day, you need to see the casting. If the casting is not happening, then you know…sometimes, it doesn’t come together. The intention is always there to work together, but it didn’t happen. We both loved working with each other, so let’s see, whenever it is meant to be.”
While we wonder how these films would have turned out to be if Ash had played the title characters, we are glad that Deepika said yes to them because let’s be honest, she was amazing in every single one of them.
