Out of the BCCI contract already and no clarity over his future with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL 2018, Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been at the cynosure of a major controversy after his wife Hasin Jahan alleged that the cricketer has been abusing her both physically and mentally, and also has illegitimate relations with many women. After revealing that the Indian cricket team pace bowler has attempted suicide in the past, Jahan made another shocking claim suggesting Shami once forced her into a room with his brother, who then tried to touch her inappropriately. The incident, as per the claims of Jahan, took place in December last year.
It has been learnt that following a complaint from his wife, Shami has been booked under the charges of murder attempt, rape, as well as assault and the police, has started an investigation into the matter, with a notice under Section 41A of CrPC asking Shami to present himself before investigators soon to be issued. “Kolkata police’s detective department has already started an investigation. We will look into all the allegations and carry out a thorough probe,” joint commissioner (crime) Praveen Tripathi was quoted as saying by TOI.
When the subject of taking Shami into custody, based on such serious allegations made by his wife, comes into the discussion, a criminal lawyer suggested that it will only happen if the cricketer refuses to cooperate in the investigation.
“The sections merit Shami’s arrest, but the cops do not need him in their custody as it is a marital dispute. Moreover, he is so famous that he cannot flee without being noticed. But he may be arrested if he refuses to cooperate,” a criminal lawyer said. A police picket was posted outside Jahan’s apartment in Jadavpur on Friday afternoon.
While several calls from Shami as well as his family have been made to Hasin soon after she went public with those WhatsApp and Facebook messages, she said that she isn’t interested in listening to their plea as the family didn’t help her during the time of need.
“I had informed each one of them about the torture Shami was inflicting on me. But none of them did anything, and instead, they urged me to adjust as I was a woman. Why should I listen to them now?” she said.
Revealing an incident from last December, Hasin claimed that Shami had forced her into a room with his elder brother, who in turn tried to touch her inappropriately. The incident too place in a room at the family’s Amroha residence in Uttar Pradesh.
“He said since I was a model, these things should not bother me much and forced me into a room with his brother, who started touching me inappropriately. He opened the door and let me go only when I screamed,” she alleged.
The controversy started heating up after Jahan posted screenshots of Shami’s alleged WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger conversations with multiple women on her Facebook account. Although the pace bowler has denied any connections with such acts and even claimed that the phone doesn’t even belong to her, the extent of claims made by his wife is too serious to be overlooked.
