Rafael Nadal Breaks John McEnroe’s 34-Year-Old Record By Winning 50th Consecutive Set On Clay

Spanish Tennis player Rafael Nadal reached an all new milestone by defeating Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4 in Madrid Open, as the victory took his tally to 50 consecutive sets on clay. He hence leapfrogged John McEnroe’s record of 49 consecutive set wins on the carpet in 1984.

American McEnroe’s epic 49-set winning streak was achieved way back in 1984, when he had also won the Madrid Indoor Open title. Nadal’s 50 sets started off with wins in Barcelona, Monte Carlo as well as last year’s French Open.

The Spanish Tennis ace is now looking for a sixth Madrid Open title and against Schwartzman, the Spaniard was briefly challenged as the Argentinian broke back to make it 4-4 in the second set, before Nadal imposed his superiority and concluded the match.

Here’s the epic description of Nadal’s 50 set counts:

6-1 6-4 6-1 6-1 6-4 6-3 6-0 6-1 6-0 6-1 6-2 6-2 6-2 2-0 6-3 6-4 6-0 6-2 6-3 6-1 6-2 6-2 6-3 6-1 6-4 6-4 6-1 6-3 6-3 6-2 6-0 6-2 6-4 6-1 6-3 6-2 6-4 6-4 6-1 6-3 6-0 7-5 6-4 6-0 6-2 6-1 6-3 6-1 6-3 6-4

The day in Madrid Open where Rafael Nadal made history, also saw Juan Martin del Potro, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep all crash out. Nadal will play Austria’s Dominic Thiem on Friday in the quarter-finals, hoping to continue his sublime form and book a place in the last four.

“When my career is over, these are things that are going to be there forever,” Nadal said. “They are big records. It’s difficult to be able to win 50 sets in a row. But I’ve done it. It’s over. Let’s not talk about that anymore and let’s focus on what we have ahead,” Nadal said after making history in Madrid.

Nadal’s epic 50-0 unbeaten run also reflects how he is yet to find a suitable rival on clay court, with Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, still struggling to impose their game on the surface.
