The highly-anticipated Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju has finally hit the screens. While the film has received great reviews from film critics, it has set off fireworks at the box-office. The opening day of the Rajkumar Hirani directorial has been pegged at a mammoth Rs 40 crore, which will make it the biggest opener of this year. If Sanju does manage to bring in these numbers, it will not only triumph over films Padmaavat and Baaghi, it will also beat Salman Khan’s Eid release Race 3.
This wouldn’t be the best news for Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, who’s recent Eid release Race 3 didn’t live upto it’s potential at the box-office. Race 3 opened north of Rs 28.5 crore, it picked up on its second day with a box-office collection of Rs 37 crore but went on a down track since then because of negative reviews and the movie going audience disliking the film.
Yet, Race 3 managed to make the 100 crore mark on it’s opening weekend, according to Box Office India. Despite the negative reviews, the Salman Khan starrer Race 3 is closing on the Rs 300 crore mark at the worldwide box-office. However, according to trade experts, Sanju will overtake Race 3’s opening day, day two, first weekend in its sleep.
“The film should make Rs 40 crore on its opening day and it would be the highest opener of the year,” Bollywood film trade analyst Atul Mohan told the Money Control. Traditionally, big blockbuster films tend to make more at the box-office on it’s second and third day because they are holidays (Saturday and Sunday) when families go out to watch movies in a theatre.
And with the positive buzz around Sanju, one can bet that the movie going audience will go out in big numbers to check out the Rajkumar Hirani flick. So, if it is slated to make Rs 40 crore on its opening day, it will make at least 20-25 per cent more as compared to its Friday box-office, or so can be assumed.
While this is excellent news for Ranbir Kapoor, the cast and crew of Sanju and his fans, at the same time, this will be quite a ego shatter for Salman Khan who’s Race 3 didn’t impress the movie going audience and the critics which lead it to underperform at the box-office compared to its potential.
Add to that, Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor’s ongoing rift because of their common alleged ex-girlfriend Katrina Kaif has time and again had them at each other’s throat (not literally). While, Salman usually has the last say, because his films have been banking big at the box-office while Ranbir Kapoor has had a line a flops in the recent past, but Sanju is likely to be a game changer for the actor and he most likely will emerge as the one victorious in this years race with Salman Khan.
