When Shahid Kapoor married Mira Rajput on July 7 in 2015, the internet had gone into a frenzy of sorts. And even though the rumours of Shahid’s impending wedding had been doing the rounds of social media, the fans were curious to know who he is marrying and what will their future hold. Little did they know that Shahid’s to-be-wife Mira was to become an overnight celebrity and would go on to reign the social media with her frequent fun posts.
While Mira is now a household name, the Delhi-based girl was only 21 when she tied the knot to the Bollywood heartthrob. She was then pursuing BA English Honors from Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College. As the couple celebrates their third wedding anniversary, here’s a look back at their fairytale modern-day love story that will make you want to believe in the idea of an arranged marriage.
Shahid and his father Pankaj Kapur are followers of the religious group Radha Soami Satsang Beas and so is Mira’s family. It was one of those occasions that the two had met and even though the age gap was huge, the two felt a connection with each other.
In an interview to Times of India, the actor had revealed that he first met Mira when he was about to begin shooting for Udta Punjab. “I remember I went to her house for the first time and I was in the Tommy zone. So, I had a ponytail, drop-crotch track pants and weird shoes on. I recall getting out of the car in this avatar at Mira’s farmhouse in Delhi. Her dad came out to welcome his son-in-law to be. He saw how I was dressed and he surely thought – ‘God what is my daughter getting married to.’ He barely looked at me, then whispered ‘Come inside’ and went away.”
It was adventurous of Mira to agree to marry a guy who looked like Tommy, the actor had said adding, “she is this 20-something girl coming out of LSR College and she was like ‘What?’ And when I told her I am playing a character called Tommy, she said, ‘That is not the name of a guy, it is the name of a dog.”
The actor also revealed that the two never dated but only met three or four times before they decided to get married. And while the two seem to be completely in awe of each other even three years after their wedding, Shahid’s first reaction was “Bees saal ki hai besharam!” Interestingly, the only condition Mira had laid for Shahid was that he will not have coloured hair, not on the wedding day at least.
The duo got married in a private wedding ceremony in Delhi in the presence of close friends and family members. Thier intimate wedding ceremony was followed by a grand reception in Mumbai where Mira was first introduced to the film fraternity members. But Shahid had maintained secrecy around his wedding for a long time as the actor didn’t wish to reveal his relationship before their formal engagement. Rest, as they say, is history.
Cut to three years later, Mira is as confident as ever. She seems to gel well with the biggies of Bollywood including Karan Johar, Neha Dhupia and Alia Bhatt among others. She knows how to grab attention and when to let go if necessary. She, in fact, has also turned out to be a muse for many designers including Anita Dongre, for whom she walked the ramp and even convinced Shahid to be with her. Mira also advocates social causes on Instagram including the beach cleaning drive she posted about last month. Both Shahid and Mira have been vocal about their relationship during media interactions.
Whether it was Mira calling Shahid a control freak in bed or Shahid sharing how much he is fond of Mira- the two are now one of Bollywood’s most loved couples. In fact, their social media PDA, too, is loved by the loyal ShaMira fan clubs.
The two, who are now parents to an adorable Misha, are expecting their second child. And this time too, Shahid will go on a paternity break to be with his wife during the crucial days.
