Another Valentine’s Day is on us! The most romantic day of the year, as it is celebrated involves some mushy exchange of chocolates, flowers and fragrances while lovebirds choose to stick to hues of red and string of lights to mark what is supposed to be the passionate date, till date. Giving the perpetual reds and lights a miss, students of Hindu College in Delhi rather have a weird tradition of their own to bring in the day. The students worship actors and actresses from the tinsel town and guess who is their pick for 2018? Jacqueline Fernandez and Ranveer Singh!
For the uninitiated, every year on V-Day hostellers at Hindu College pick an actress to perform a pooja as Damdami Mai. The boys hold a common belief that those who take part in the ritual will find a partner in the following 6 months. Disha Patani was Goddess Damdami Mai last year but she has now been replaced by Judwaa 2 actress Jacqueline Fernandez. However, the tradition comes with a twist this year. While only a Damdami Mata is chosen every Valentine’s Day, male counterpart Love Guru was introduced this year to be chosen by the girls hostel. No brownie points for guessing who was their pick…
A report on the Hindustan Times quoted the president of the Hindu College, Lalit Kumar as saying, “We mostly only choose a Damdami Mata every year, but this year we will also have a new introduction, a Love Guru – the male counterpart of the Damdami Mai. While the Damdami Mai is decided by the boys’ hostel, the Love Guru was chosen this year by the girls’ hostel. Jacqueline Fernandez and Ranveer Singh were chosen because they are the hottest and the most in-demand stars right now. Something that makes them worthy of the status of Damdami Mai and Love Guru.”
In an interview with Times of India last year, a hosteller at Hindu College had explained the pooja saying, “Damdami Mai is usually the actress who has been popular in that particular year, and who is also voted for by the most hostellers. Like always, we will have the puja on the morning of February 14. And a fresher will perform the puja as he will be the pandit for that day. As always, condoms will be used to decorate the Virgin Tree.”
What may have started out a joke is now a yearly ritual at Hindu College. Bizarre, isn’t it?
