New Delhi: Recovering from the neck injury that urged him to pull out of his anticipated Count stint, Indian skipper Virat Kohli took the Yo-Yo test on Friday and successfully cleared the permissible mark. Ergo, he will now take part in the two-match T20I series against Ireland before the marquee England series. However, what came as a shocker for many present at the venue was that middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu failed to pass the test.
Kohli had incurred a neck injury during his penultimate Indian Premier League 2018 match. He later pulled out of his county stint with Surrey Cricket Club, which he was supposed to play in June (only) in a bid to improve his numbers in England. BCCI had then informed about Kohli’s test on June 15 and he successfully crossed the mark of 16.1.
For Rayudu, he was the top-scorer for IPL 2018 champions Chennai Super Kings and was an unlikely hero for them as well, fitting in well in the batting order as a floater. Mahendra Singh Dhoni had even praised Rayudu after he scored a century in the season. His starry performance with the willow earned him a place in the Indian squad for Ireland after more than one and half years. But the man who scored close to 600 runs this IPL, recorded just 14 in the Yo-Yo test.
“Almost all the players including skipper Virat Kohli have comfortably cleared the qualifying mark for the YoYo test. Ambati Rayudu is the only player in the UK-bound squad, who has failed to clear the fitness test. His score is well below the permissible 16.1 set for the India and India A team. Rayudu will be dropped from the squad,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.
The tests were conducted at the National Cricket Academy ground in Bengaluru with Kohli, Dhoni, Bhuvneshwar Kumar participating in the first batch, followed by the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Siddharth Kaul, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Manish Pandey. Meanwhile, Suresh Raina has cleared the Yo-Yo test as well.
India will play Ireland on June 27,beforee playing the second T20I on June 29.
