Xiaomi Redmi 5, the much-anticipated smartphone, is most likely to launch in India today. The Chinese company has been teasing the smartphone with hashtag ‘Compact Powerhouse’ which looks to tease the battery prowess of the handset. The India launch of the Xiaomi Redmi 5 comes merely weeks after the successful launches of the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones. Chinese mobile handset maker Xiaomi will most likely unveil its Redmi 5 smartphone in the country today and it will be available via Amazon India apart from the company’s online and offline stores. While there’s no official confirmation that Xiaomi will launch the Redmi 5 in India, e-tailer Amazon India has a page dedicated to an upcoming smartphone which it is teasing as a ‘#compact powerhouse’. The event is scheduled for Wednesday at 3PM.
Xiaomi has teased the upcoming smartphone by highlighting its ‘compactness’, camera, processor and design. Projecting the smartphone as a compact device, we can assume that it will fit better in the hands of its users. The company is claiming better selfies in low-lighting conditions, and users can expect an improved front-facing shooter. With respect to the internals, the smartphone may include Snapdragon 450 chipset- the octa-core ARM Cortex A53 CPU results in 25 percent increase in computing performance compared to its predecessor (Snapdragon 435). If reports are to go by, the device will be 0.30″ thin and is another key highlight of the smartphone.
Redmi Note 5 was launched in the company’s home market of China in December 2017. The smartphone measures 5.98×2.87×0.30″ and weighs nearly 157 grams. It has a glass front and metal back with plastic material used for the frame and the ends. It sports a 5.7-inch HD+ (720x1440p) IPS LCD display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Shielding the display is Corning Gorilla Glass. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset with Adreno 506 GPU. It includes 2/3 GB RAM and 16/32GB of internal memory (supports expandable storage of up to 128GB via microSD card). On the camera front, there is a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash. The rear camera can shoot Full HD video at 30 frames per second. The front-facing camera is a 5-megapixel shooter which can record 1080p video. Redmi 5 is backed by a 3300mAh battery and runs on MIUI 9.1 which is based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system.
Redmi 5 is available in Black, Gold, Light Blue, Rose Gold colour options. It is priced 1099 yuan (approximately Rs. 11, 292) for the 4GB variant, 899 yuan (approximately Rs. 9237) for the 3GB variant and 799 yuan ( approximately Rs. 8210) for the 2GB variant. While the Redmi 5A and Redmi 5 Plus are already available in India with the latter being launched as the Redmi Note 5 in India, Xiaomi might be looking to complete the trifecta which it launched in China and introduce Xiaomi Redmi 5 in the Indian market.
